TOLERANCE OF FUSARIUM OXYSPORUM F.SP.GLADIOLI TO BENZIMIDAZOLE FUNGICIDES

Author:   R.O. Magie
Abstract:
Gladiolus corm losses due to Fusarium oxysporum Schlect.f.sp.gladioli (Massey) Sny.& Hans. were severe on two farms where benomyl had been applied as a corm dip during a 30 month period. Isolates of the pathogen from corms on those farms tolerated over 200 times more benomyl than isolates from corms not treated with benomyl. Benomyl tolerant strains also tolerated thiadiazole and thiophanate methyl and were as pathogenic to corms as non-tolerant strains.

The tolerant strains retained their pathogenicity after 14 transfers in vitro. Corms inoculated with a tolerant strain and then treated with benomyl rotted more severely than inoculated corms soaked in water only.
