ISHS Acta Horticulturae 47: II International Symposium on Flower Bulbs

THE PRODUCTION, PROPAGATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF VIRUS-FREE CLONES OF NARCISSUS TAZETTA CV. "GRAND SOLEIL D'OR"

Authors:   O.M. Stone, A.A. Brunt, M. Hollings
Abstract:
Five viruses have been isolated from Narcissus tazetta cv. Grand Soleil d'Or : tomato black ring, strawberry latent ringspot, arabis mosaic, cucumber mosaic and narcissus degeneration viruses. No virus-free plants were found in cultivation. Plants infected with arabis mosaic and narcissus degeneration viruses were freed from virus by meristem-tip culture. Virus-free bulbs grew more vigorously than infected ones and gave more and larger flowers with a better colour. To accelarate the multiplication of virus-free stock various methods of propagation were tried. Multiplication using chips consisting of parts of two or three bulb scales plus basal plate gave an overall rate of c.4 x per annum. A scheme has been organised to replant the Isles of Scilly with virus-free bulbs, requiring 20 million bulbs by 1978. The work is being done in collaboration with the Nuclear Stock Association (Ornamentals) Ltd. and will be a pilot scheme for a much larger project with virus-free trumpet daffodils.
