ISHS Acta Horticulturae 469: International Symposium on Composting & Use of Composted Material in Horticulture

BENEFITS AND RISKS OF ENZYME-AUGMENTED COMPOSTING FOR AGARICUS MUSHROOM PRODUCTION

Authors:   Paul J. Wuest, David M. Beyer, Harry R. Muthersbaugh
Keywords:   enzyme, composting, supplement, A. Bisporus, SMS
Abstract:
A commercial enzyme preparation described as polysaccharidase adsorbed on amylodextrin was added to horse manure at 200 g t-1. Composting was speeded, composting odors were partially modified and mushroom yield increased. The enzyme treatment served as a synergist for three nutrient supplements added at spawning, increasing their yield enhancing ability. Overall, conversion of horse manure into mushrooms ranged from 515 to 633 kg t-1.
