ISHS Acta Horticulturae 469: International Symposium on Composting & Use of Composted Material in Horticulture

POTENTIAL FOR CO-UTILISATION OF ROCKDUST AND COMPOSTED MATERIAL

Authors:   R. A.K. Szmidt, J. Ferguson, S. McLennan, Cedric A. Wilkins

Abstract:
Rockdust is a generic term describing material from quarrying operations, typically of 90% particle size <200 mesh size. It may be co-utilised with compost in soil and horticultural growing media or alternatively may be a feedstock to a composting process.

There is a body of circumstantial evidence that either method may be beneficial. Such claims, and mode of action of material are unproven. This paper reviews literature on use of rockdust and outlines a programme of research to test the premise of beneficial use of rockdusts for horticulture.
