ISHS Acta Horticulturae 469: International Symposium on Composting & Use of Composted Material in Horticulture

INFORMATION NETWORKS AND DATA SOURCES FOR COMPOST RESEARCH

Author:   R.A.K. Szmidt
Keywords:   information sources, information technology, IT, compost, composting
Abstract:
This short paper summarises the conclusions of a workshop on communication of information and the use of electronic information technologies for compost science. This data is not statistically robust but reflects awareness of delegates to information technology. The majority of respondents to a survey used Email in the course of their work. Of these the majority were connected not only to internal information systems but also to the internet. A significant proportion of respondents recognised the needs and the potential benefit of an interactive dialogue. However, at the time of writing the principle use of Email and internet systems was for messaging and for sourcing information, e.g. about institutions/universities or grant awarding authorities. Opportunities for developing a totally interactive electronic discussion forum were debated. One example of how this may work is noted.
