Abstract:
The use of new organic materials arising from agricultural, industrial and human activities in growing media needs knowledge of their biostability since this influences their physical and chemical properties.

A joint research project between IRTA Centre of Cabrils (Spain) and INRA Centre of Angers (France) had studied the state of biostability of six organic materials (finnish peat, pine bark compost, yard compost, forest waste compost, raw coir, cattle manure compost) and of binary mixtures on their physical and chemical properties. The organic materials were ranked according their stability index using three groups: very stable products which were raw coir and pine bark compost, yard compost; stable products which were finnish peat and forest waste compost; and a low stability product which was cattle manure compost.

The physical and chemical characteristics of the composts were a function of the biostability of the raw materials and mixtures.
