ISHS Acta Horticulturae 469: International Symposium on Composting & Use of Composted Material in Horticulture

HIGH QUALITY COMPOST FROM HOUSEHOLD SOLID WASTE: FACT OR FICTION?

Author:   P. Schauner
Abstract:
Municipal waste compost has a bad reputation: in Europe, many composting facilities continue to process mixed household solid waste and produce compost that is contaminated by heavy metals, plastic film and glass. Therefore, professional users are reluctant to use such products and many people think that it is not possible to obtain good quality compost from municipal solid waste. Recent full scale source separation programmes conducted jointly by municipalities, waste industry and compost users, have demonstrated that the choice of an appropriate feedstock and the development of specific technologies can overcome the compost quality barrier and reach the most demanding end-markets, while successfully meeting the plant operating constraints of maximising compost yield.
