| Abstract:
Cuticular fractures in sweet cherry fruits are defects that influence fruit quality negatively. Comparisons of fracture development in two sweet cherry cultivars grown under similar conditions revealed that the distribution of fractures as classified into fracturing classes 1–5 varied between cultivars. An investigation of the influence of cuticular fractures on cracking susceptibility of the fruits by means of a cracking index test-procedure demonstrated that fruits with many fractures crack more easily than did fruits with unfractured cuticles. Sweet cherry fruits from a rootstock trial with six different rootstocks developed different amounts of cuticular fractures; fruits of cv Ulster showed significant differences between rootstocks, while fruits of cv Stella grown on the same six rootstocks developed approximately the same amount of fractures regardless of the type of rootstock. | |
