ISHS Acta Horticulturae 468: III International Cherry Symposium

INVESTIGATION ON THE OVERLAPPING FLOWERING OF 6 VARIETIES OF SWEET CHERRIES

Abstract:
The dynamics of anthesis can be studied with a logistic function as presented in our previous papers. The first derivative of this function is a bell shape curve that represents the flowers' daily opening percentage. The overlapping of the anthesis bell curves of a variety pollinated with its pollen source can be evaluated mathematically to obtain the percentage of curves overlap. For 6 sweet cherry varieties, over a period of 4 years, the 15 possible combinations of pairs were analytically calculated, and resulting percentages of overlapping ranging from 0.57 till 92.88 %. If genetic compatibility between 2 varieties is the conditio sine qua non for fruit setting, also a high percentage of overlapping of their daily flower opening is determinant. Our approach evidences a variability in the overlapping percentages of anthesis among different years in spite of the genetic compatibility between 2 varieties. These results are useful for a proper choice of varieties to be grown in the orchard.
