Abstract:
During a breeding programme incompatibility groups for some German cherry cultivars (cvs) were identified through hybridisation data and pollen tube growth studies.
The recently released cvs from Jork Station: ‘Alma’, ‘Annabella’, ‘Bianca’ and their pollen parent ‘Allers Späte’ were identified as being S1S5 like ‘Valera’. The sister cvs ‘Oktavia’ and ‘Regina’ proved incompatible with ‘Erika’ and ‘Valeska’ and belong to the same group as ‘Van’ and ‘Venus’, being S1S3.
Our pollen tube growth studies confirm the results from Boskovic and Tobutt (1996), that the self-fertile ‘Stella’ and ‘Sunburst’ are S3S4' and ‘Lapins’ S1S4'
Among 12 progenies derived from self-fertile parents five segregate 1:1 and seven resulted in self-fertile seedlings only.
This is in full accordance with expectation.
