FLOWERING IN CHERRIES AS AFFECTED BY PRE-BLOOM TEMPERATURES

Author:   S. Vestrheim
Keywords:   Sweet cherry, sour cherry, flowering prediction, flowering time, balloon stage
Abstract:
Relations between pre-bloom temperatures and date of the balloon state were calculated based on observations during a period of 40 years, - 1958 – 1997. There was a close correlation between mean temperature in March/April and onset of flowering in sweet cherries, and similarily for sour cherries, where, however, correlation between mean temperature in April was equally strong. Time of the onset of flowering in cherries in As may vary by more than one month, from late April to early June. There was a tendency to higher temperatures, and earlier bloom start, towards the last part of the period in question.
