GROWTH AND FRUITING OF TWO SWEET CHERRY CULTIVARS WITH DIFFERENT INTERSTEMS

Abstract:
Different interstems for two sweet cherry cultivars (Van and Red Büttner's) were investigated for 16 years at the Experimental Station in Lipowa (southeastern Poland). Seedlings of Prunus avium and Prunus mahaleb were used as rootstocks. The following interstems were used: weak growing hybrids and cultivars of sweet cherry and sour cherry and selected clones of Prunus fruticosa Pall. Trees of each cultivar on Prunus avium seedlings, without an interstem, served as controls. Health status, tree size, yield and fruit weight were recorded annually.

Interstems modified the tree size and yield of both cultivars. Trees of ‘Van’ grafted on Prunus avium and Prunus mahaleb seedlings with an interstem of Prunus fruticosa No 8 were the smallest. Growth of trees was reduced also by using of the following interstems: North Star, Prunus fruticosa No 9, hybrid Pandy x Ostheimer Weichsel and Prunus cerasus from Kent.
