ISHS Acta Horticulturae 468: III International Cherry Symposium

UTILIZATION OF MOLECULAR GENETICS IN CHERRY

Authors:   A.F. Iezzoni, T.S. Brettin
Keywords:   Prunus, sweet cherry, sour cherry, linkage map
Abstract:
Genome mapping and molecular marker technologies hold great promise to improve the effectiveness of plant breeders and germplasm curators. However, due to the high cost of these technologies, it is important that collaborative projects be designed so that the tools (i.e. molecular markers) are used appropriately to most efficiently achieve the desired research goals. The objective of this presentation is to outline some important questions for cherry breeders and geneticists that can now be addressed by the use of molecular genetics. Examples will include the following topics: (1) map-based breeding approaches such as marker assisted selection and quantitative trait locus analysis, (2) comparative mapping, (3) gene isolation strategies using the S-allele locus as an example, (4) germplasm characterization, (5) phylogenetic analyses, and (6) cultivar identification.
