| Abstract:
The sweet cherry breeding programme at the University of Bologna's DCA, which has bred more than 5,000 seedlings since its inception over 15 years ago, is designed to introduce such traits as self-fertility, early initial bearing, broader ripening seasonality, enhanced fruit quality characters and the compact an/or spur habit into the best-performing local cultivars that lack them either in full or in part. Almost fifty seedlings have progressed to selections stage two or three and three new self-fertile cultivars, ‘Blaze Star’, ‘Early Star’ and ‘Lala Star’, have been patented and released. The programme was expanded in 1994 to investigate over a three-year period the transmission of the main traits in 500 seedlings. Self-fertility was the only trait to evince a two-class segregation, whereas compact/spur habit, fruit size, taste, early bearing and ripening date exhibited a continuous variation in extent. The segregation data and the best-transmitting parents are reported and discussed. | |
