ISHS Acta Horticulturae 468: III International Cherry Symposium

EVALUATION OF SWEET CHERRY CULTIVARS ON DAMIL® (GM61/1) ROOTSTOCK

Author:   Ph. Druart
Keywords:   Dwarfing rootstock, intensive orchard, cherry assortment
Abstract:
Most of the promising selections obtained from Summerland, Geneva and the Hungarian breeding programmes were screened on Damil® rootstock, for their adaptability to new intensive "spindle" and "hedge" orchards and for graft compatibility, tree growth, flowering capacity and precocity, and fruit characteristics.

Till now, graft incompatibility never occured with healthy cultivars. Trunk or lateral branches straightening affected the trees of vigorous cultivars trained in the "hedge" system. Spring frost tolerance was noted. Harvesting date and yield were recorded from 1992 to 1996. The weight of the fruits, their size, their cracking tolerance and their firmness were measured and led us to classify the cultivars. A complete description of each cultivar has been made. All the data will contribute to the choice of an update sweet cherry assortment more convenient for modern training methods.
