Abstract:
From the 70s on the Centre for Fruit Culture has been screening cherry cultivars at the research station in Rillaar, Flanders, Belgium. The presented results concern a trial planted in 1988 to 1990 with trees grafted on Damil. The cultivars were mainly screened for 1) fruit size, 2) productivity, 3) fruit firmness, 4) cracking susceptibility. Blooming intensity, bloom date, tree health, growth habit, taste, fruit colour and fruit shape were also taken into account. Results have been averaged over 4 years (1993–1996).

Based on this and prior trials five main varieties are recommended to the Belgian cherry growers: Kordia, Lapins, Schneiders Späte Knorpelkirsche, Sylvia and Regina. From the 1988–90 trial 14 additional cultivars were selected for a second screening and are therefore recommended for trial plantations: Garnet, Hartland, Ruby, Somerset, Summit, Sweetheart, Vernon, 13S-18–15, 13S-35–43, 13S-39–51 and 13S-49–24.
