Abstract:
Three hundred and two samples of materials from edible plants, including 16 families, 91 Species, most of which were common Chinese vegetables, were tested for EBV activation inhibitory activity in Raji cells.
As a result, 76 (25.5%) and 134 (44.4%) of the species of vegetable-extracts inhibited the activation strongly and moderately, respectively.
Strong activity was mostly found in the vegetables of Labiatae of 87.5% (14/15). Perilla, broccoli, some seed of bitter gourd, amaranth and yam showed strong activity, even at low concentration.
Vegetables of Cruciferae, which are indigenous in China, also showed high inhibitory rate; these included mustard, red flowering Chinese cabbage and garden cress.
Result suggest that anti-tumor promoters exists in a wide variety of Chinese vegetables.
The anti-tumor promoting activity varied with the plant cultivars, parts of plant, extracted solvent, maturity on age, and the environment of cultivation may be an important factor for inhibitory activity.
