UTILIZATION OF WINTER RAPE IN A HEAVY SNOW REGION

Author:   S. Watanabe
Keywords:   Brassica napus L., harvesting period, ascorbic acid (vitamin-C)
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to estimate the usefulness of winter rape (Brassica napus L.) as an overwintering vegetable crop grown outdoors and utilized in spring in heavy snow regions of Japan. For this reason, the harvesting period and total ascorbic acid (Vitamin-C) concentration of winter rape were examined. Primary flower stalk was harvested after snowcover melted away. Although the harvesting period in one variety was at most two weeks, the possibility of prolonging the harvesting period suggested combining varieties with different bolting characteristics. Several varieties were harvested within a week after snowcover melting, suggesting that winter rape could be one of the earliest stem and leafy vegetables to be harvested outdoors in spring in a heavy snow region. The total ascorbic acid concentration of the harvests was high, approximately 100 mg per 100 g fresh weight of the entire harvest, and seemed to be stable during the harvesting period. Also, there was little difference in the total ascorbic acid concentration among varieties and lines. These results suggested that winter rape is a useful vegetable crop in a heavy snow region also from the viewpoint of its nutritive value.
