ISHS Acta Horticulturae 466: II Workshop on Pome Fruit

DECREASE OF STARCH TO PREDICT THE 'OPTIMUM HARVEST DATE' FOR APPLE STORAGE

Author:   H. Baumann
Keywords:   Malus domestica Borkh., firmness, starch degradation
Abstract:
The 'optimum harvest date' (OHD) is defined as the date in each year when harvesting results in optimum fruit quality of the produce after long-term storage. This may be defined for individual fruits, for parts of a crop of certain trees or for a growing area. Much more important concerning the harvesting process are the earliest harvest date and the last one to get an acceptable quality from the store for fruits of a certain orchard. The earliest date of harvest is related to the development of good flavour and aroma especially in ULO or to problems of scald with sensitive varieties, i.e. 'Cox' at certain locations or the variety 'Berlepsch' in the Rhineland. Predicting this EHD for each orchard defends the grower from trouble with unnecessary low crop and with unripe fruit after storage, which will not ripen to acceptable eating quality even at elevated temperature.
