Keywords:   fruit firmness, bitter pit, calcium chloride, postharvest diseases
Abstract:
Leaf sprays with calcium compounds are standard in the Spanish apple industry to avoid postharvest diseases and enhance fruit firmness. Although this kind of spray programs are widely used, incidence of postharvest disorders such as bitter pit appear. On the other hand an increasing demand for firmer fruit drives the necessity, specially in certain fruit growing areas, to improve strategies to increase calcium content in apple fruit. Revised strategies advancing date of first treatment by 10 days and increasing frequency of applications from every 20 days to 10 days where examined. Results indicate that increasing frequency of application where more effective in increasing calcium content than advancing date of first treatment.
