| Abstract:
Fruit is sold on the European market in quality classes primarily based on fruit size and in some cultivars colour. Large fruits are considered to be of better quality and achieve a higher prize. Internal quality components are not considered in spite the fact that a large fruit size also can be promoted in ways which doesn't necessarily guarantee a high internal quality. Pre harvest growing conditions i.e. cultural practises and climate have major impacts on fruit development and quality. The effects of different growing conditions on fruit quality are discussed primarily based on a review of work done during the last 10 years at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Copenhagen. Relations between fruit size and internal quality is discussed as well as the relevance of a differentiated quality grading system on the European marked which includes internal factors. | |
