ISHS Acta Horticulturae 465: IV International Peach Symposium

A COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT FRUITING SHOOTS OF PEACH TREE

Authors:   D. Fournier, E. Costes, Y. Guédon
Keywords:   axillary productions, flower buds, fruiting shoots, hidden semi-Markov chain, model peach trees, Prunus persica
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to analyze the location and the distribution of axillary productions along fruiting shoots in peach tree. A qualitative description highlights a succession of several zones, characterized by different types of axillary productions.

We used two variables to describe these productions: the first variable takes into account the fate of the axillary meristem during the current season's growth (sylleptic shoot, floral or vegetative axillary bud), the second variable focuses on the number of lateral flowers associated with the axillary bud. Hence, a shoot was described node by node as a bivariate discrete sequence and the succession of zones revealed by an exploratory analysis was modelled by a hidden semi-Markov chain (Costes and Guédon, 1997).

The fruiting shoots differ in the characteristics of the model, in particular the number of states and the axillary productions associated to. An analysis of the « vigor effect » on the shoot structure is proposed through the occurrence of particular states.
