Abstract:
The relationships between vegetative growth and the production quality of peach trees, cv ‘Suncrest’ grafted on 9 different rootstocks (PS A5, PS A6, Rubira, GF 677, Barrier 1, Citation, Julior, Ishtara, Jaspi) was investigated.
The trial was carried out in 1996 in an experimental orchard near Cuneo (North-West Italy) on 6 replicate 3-year old trees per rootstock, trained into the vase system.
During the vegetative season, annual shoot development and leaf size and number were measured; at harvést, total yield, fruit number, soluble solid content and titratable acidity of fruit juice were measured.
Pruning wood weight, primary branch development and trunk growth were assessed.
Rootstocks enhancing vegetative development induced a delay in the bearing-stage.
Plum-tree hybrid rootstocks were able to control tree size and bring forward the bearing-stage.
These preliminary results should be completed with further years of trial.
