Abstract:
Fruit growth was studied at different leaf fruit (L:F) ratios in the presence and absence of vegetative growth on girdled fruit-bearing shoot to study vegetative and reproductive competition in a late maturing peach cultivar.
Vegetative growth seemed to be independent of fruit growth and was similar between different fruit-bearing shoots at different L:F ratios.
Vegetative growth penalized fruit growth at the beginning of the second fruit growth phase.
Fruit growth depended on L:F ratio and was favored when the leafy shoot had more than 7 to 8 leaves.
In this case, fruit associated with vegetative growth grew better than fruit with only five leaves per shoot.
Two to three leaves seemed to be necessary for vegetative apex growth.
