Abstract:
In the 1995/96 winter, the susceptibility of one year-old shoots of peach and nectarine to low temperature was observed.
The shoots studied originated from trees planted in 1991. In November and December the shoots were frozen under laboratory conditions.
After the minimum temperature of -21.5°C was reached on December 28th, freezing was stopped.
Shoot injury caused by low temperature was evaluated using a survival test.
In November the highest freezing resistance was found in the cultivars Candor, Iskra, Nr 569 and Harken, they could stand the temperature of -17.5°C The lowest freezing resistance was found in the cultivar Fantasia.
In December the temperature of -20°C was lethal for all cultivars except Nr 569, Iskra and Hardired.
The evaluation of winter survival, which was conducted in March, showed that the shoots of the cultivars Iskra and Nr 569 had the least freezing injury among all 11 peach and nectarine cultivars studied.
