RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SHOOTS AND THE REST OF THE TREE: EFFECT ON FRUIT GROWTH

Authors:   M. Ben Mimoun, M. Génard, J. Besset
Keywords:   Prunus persica, fruit load, assimilates transfer, fruit-bearing shoot
Abstract:
Different experiments were conducted during 1995, on girdled and ungirdled fruit-bearing shoots of a late maturing peach cultivar (Suncrest). Three different fruit loads per fruit-bearing shoot were applied: one, two and six fruits per shoot. Results show that the rest of the tree buffers the effect of individual shoot fruit load. The rest of the tree acted as sink or source depending on the individual shoot fruit load. The leaf per fruit (L:F) ratio of the rest of the tree is defined as an "equilibrium L:F ratio". The effect of the rest of the tree is explained on the basis of this equilibrium.
