MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF NECTARINE VARIETIES ‘TWIGS AND FLOWERS’

Abstract:
Morphological characteristics of twigs and flowers were investigated for three years in nectarine varieties in Hungary at Szigetcsép. The differences among varieties are well shown by the characteristics of flowers and shoots. Some morphological characteristics of flowers vary greatly each year, but essential differences were found among varieties. In most varieties we found more stamina, than expected. On average, 43 stamina were counted in the flowers of Stark Sunglo. The length of the pistil was between 15.7 mm and 21.3 mm. In 1996 we found some characteristics that seemed to be unusual. Investigating the shoot characteristics essential differences were found between years. The flower bud density (FBD) was between 0.33/node (Maria Laura) and 1.5/node (Maybelle). Under Hungarian climatic conditions higher FBD is required because of frost damage.
