Abstract:
The European Prunus network (ECP/GR : European Cooperative Programme for Crop Genetic Resources) under the authority of IPGRI (International Plant Genetic Resource Institute) has initiated a European Prunus Database for the management of the Prunus genetic resource collections.
It covers a great number of Prunus genetic resource collections in most of the European countries.
The European Prunus Database is managed by INRA (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique) in Bordeaux and was transferred onto MS-Access software to enable a friendly use.
In the future, it will be accessible via Internet.
It contains passport data and primary characterisation descriptors.
The passport data were harmonised with the other European plant genetic resource databases.
The introduction of agronomic and morphological descriptors is under discussion.
The improvement of the database is supported by a European project.
The final objective is to sort out the valuable material originated from Europe in the Prunus genetic resources.
Therefore, the list of a Prunus European « core collection » should be established.
The European Prunus Database will permit to exchange information and to rationalise the conservation of genetic resources.
