ISHS Acta Horticulturae 465: IV International Peach Symposium

BREEDING OF PEACH CULTIVARS IN POLAND

Author:   T. Jakubowski
Keywords:   Prunus persica, selection
Abstract:
The breeding project, with the goal to develop winter hardy peaches, was started at Skierniewice in 1964. Winter hardy Chinese selections: 'Hui-hun-tao', 'Winter Peach', 'Bai-tao' and 'Manchurian Peach', were crossed with commercial cultivars: 'Meredith', 'Jerseyland' and 'Sunapee'. The population of 300 seedlings was evaluated in the period of 1968–1972.

The most promising F1 hybrids were either selfed or back-crossed with commercial cultivars and the F2 generation was produced. The population of 456 hybrids was evaluated in the period 1972–1976. Selected F2 hybrids were back- and sib-crossed and a population of 3000 F3 seedlings was produced in 1978–1982. Unfortunately, the active peach breeding program was stopped in 1986 due to the lack of the financial support.

The two most promising selections from the F2 generation were named 'Iskra' and 'Inka'. Both were taken to the Polish Register of Cultivated Plants in 1994.
