Abstract:
Infection of picking wounds by entry of organisms such as Botrytis cinerea at harvest time are a major cause of losses in coolstored kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa). Market sensitivity to fungicide residues has created a need for control measures based on natural resistance mechanisms, or on topical treatment of the picking wound tissues (ca. 0.2% of the total surface) with synthetic or natural antifungal compounds.
Seasonal or developmental variation in resistance indicators, and their induction by salicylic acid sprays, or by injury or infection were investigated.
Vinclozolin applied topically to the picking wound surface produced internal residues.
Pentylpyrone applied similarly did not produce internal residues, but accelerated ripening in warm fruit.
