DYNAMICAL DESCRIPTION ANALYSIS OF THE FIRMNESS OF APPLES FOR DIFFERENT COMMERCIAL VARIETIES, ON AND OFF THE TREE

Authors:   J. Verreydt, E. Schrevens
Abstract:
In this study the acoustic impulse response method serves as a non-destructive tool to monitor the changes of the firmness of apples on and off the tree. This is tested for some important apple cultivars ranging from early maturing to late maturing ones. The early maturing cultivar ‘Summerred’ shows significant lower firmness values than the mid-season ones and late-season ones through the whole growing season. Especially ‘Braeburn’ remains firm on the tree. Off the tree the retention of the firmness of this cultivar is similar to the mid-season and mid-late ones. A better understanding of these varietal differences would help the assessment of quality.
