ISHS Acta Horticulturae 463: VIII International Symposium on Plant Bioregulation in Fruit Production

EFFECT OF PROMALIN ON FRUIT SHAPE AND QUALITY OF STARKING DELICIOUS APPLE CULTIVAR

Authors:   M. Burak, M. Büyükyilmaz
Keywords:   Apple, Malus Domestica, promalin, gibberellin, Delicious, growth regulator
Abstract:
Turkey is one of the most important apple grower country in the World's apple production. Besides production, fruit quality is also a crucial measure in apple marketing. 60 % of apple production is consisted of Starking Delicious cultivar and this cultivar does not make its ideal shape and good colour when grown in lowlands.

It is supposed that there could be a higher gibberellin content in the fruit grown on the hills than in that grown in lowlands and thus fruits grown on highlands show better shape and colour.

In order to obtain an ideal shape (type 'Delicious') and good colour with better quality for Starking Delicious grown in lowlands, Promalin (GA4A7 + 6-BA) was applied at different doses at full bloom with repeated applications. The high doses showed advers effect on fruit shape and caused overthinning, whereas, low doses seem to be promissing in increasing fruit size, fruit length (L) and fruit diameter (D). In addition, the fruit L/D ratio and fruit typiness were improved when comparing with those of untreated controls.
