Abstract:
CPPU at concentrations 2.5–10 mg/L applied soon after bloom or on the fruitlets 12 mm in diameter increased fruit size at harvest without pronounced thinning.
Fruit asymmetry was often observed and return bloom was decreased the following year.
Subsequent studies were focused on alleviating these effects on fruit form and flower formation by attempting to enhance the thinning effect with combinations of CPPU with NAA or carbaryl.
In 1995 and 1996, all chemicals were applied at relatively low concentrations (e.g.
CPPU 2.5, 5 and 10 mg/L, NAA at 15 and 25 mg/L, carbaryl at 380 mg/L) soon after bloom or at a mean fruit diameter of about 12 mm.
Thinning sprays were applied to 'Lobo' and 'Gala' apple trees.
The addition of NAA or carbaryl to CPPU enhanced fruit size at harvest with no market effect on the yield and soluble solids or fruit firmness.
Return bloom was enhanced on CPPU and NAA treated trees.
The addition of NAA or carbaryl to CPPU treatment did not significantly reduce the incidence of misshapen fruits.
