TRANSPORT AND METABOLISM OF THE GIBBERELLINS A1, A3, AND A4 AFTER APPLICATION TO DEVELOPING APPLE FRUITS OF MALUS DOMESTICA cv. JONAGOLD

Authors:   M. Stephan, F. Bangerth, G. Schneider
Keywords:   Malus domestica, biennial bearing, endogenous gibberellins, exudates, LC/ESI-MS
Abstract:
By feeding radioactive GA1, GA3 and GA4 to either young apple fruits or pedicels the radioactivity was found to be exported into adjacent organs in only small but distinct amounts.

GA1 and GA3 applied either to fruits or pedicels, were shown to be rapidly metabolized to GA1-13-O-glucoside and GA3-13-O-glucoside. In the case of GA4 the formed metabolites could not be identified yet, but they are different from GA4-3-O-glucoside, GA34 or GA8.

In exudates from developing apple fruits GA1, GA3, GA4, GA7, GA20 and GA34 could be identified by LC/ESI-MS demonstrating the export of GAs out of the fruits. In immature apple seeds the occurrence of endogenous GA1, GA3, GA4, GA7, GA20 and GA34 was also confirmed by LC/ESI-MS. Quantifications on the basis of full scan analyses showed that the amounts in seeds do not reflect the amounts of exported GAs in exudates.
