Abstract:
At The Higher Institute of Agriculture in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, a study was conducted on eight annual short-day onion cultivars.
Four sowing times: 9, 16, 25 and 30 September were tested in the period 1993 – 1994. It was done with the purpose of introducing a new method of onion production for the climatological conditions of South Bulgaria: direct sowing of overwintering annual onion crops in the autumn.
It was found that the latest possible time for autumn sowing in the conditions of Plovdiv region is 25 September.
The cultivars Top Keeper, Omega and Aldobo brought about the highest yields and best characteristics.
Thus, the yields were obtained as early as in May - June of the next year.
