SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC CHARACTERISTICS OF SPERMODERM IN SOME POTATO CULTIVARS

Authors:   D. Terziisky, A. Stefanova
Keywords:   seed tuber, testa type, submicroscopic relief, Solanum tuberosum L.
Abstract:
The results of a scanning electron microscopic analysis of seeds from four potato cultivars are given in this article. The study was made on air dry seeds with no fixation and covered only by carbon. The spermoderm has a reticulate submicroscopic relief with convex anticlinal and concave periclinal walls. By their spermoderm submicroscopic characteristics, the four potato cultivars tested were grouped into two groups: a) Adreta and Herta - with narrow periclinal walls; b) Zvikov and Manuela - with wide, massive anticlinal walls. The submicroscopic characteristics established can be used as diagnostic criteria in seed potato cultivars.
