THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF GREEK EGGPLANT VARIETIES TO VERTICILLIUM WILT.

Abstract:
The degree of susceptibility of four Greek eggplant varieties, “Emi”, “Tsakoniki”, “Langada” and “Skoutari” to Verticillium dahliae was studied during a three year period (1993 – 1995). Uniform eggplant seedlings of these vars. were transplanted in a field inoculated with the fungus. The height from cotyledons to apex, the fresh weight and the commercial yield were measured in each plant. The disease intensity (D. I.), rated from 1–6 (1=healthy plant, 6=dead plant), as a combination of a leaf symptom index from 1 to 6 and the vascular discoloration intensity from 1 to 4, was used for disease estimation. Susceptibility assessment of the above vars. was made by the correlation coefficient (r) between the D. I., and the four mentioned characteristics. Significant negative correlation was obtained: Firstly, between D. I. and plant height of the varieties studied (r=-0.507, -0.615, -0.520 and -0.518, respectively). Secondly, between D. I. and fresh weight (r=-0.473, -0.713, -0.737 and -0.727, respectively) and thirdly, between D. I. and commercial yield (r=-0.607, -0.640, -0.620 and -0.586, respectively). The percentage of diseased plants from each of the four vars. were 100%, 91.11%, 84.44% and 97.77%, respectively. In conclusion, variety “Emi” was the most and var. “Langada” the least susceptible. Varieties “Tsakoniki” and “Skoutari” showed intermediate susceptibility to V. dahliae.
