Abstract:
A study was done of the fruit set of some commercial tomato hybrids and breeding lines as affected by three different greenhouse heating systems: passive solar (PSS), gas oil air furnace, and anti-frost protection. PSS increased the number of flowers per inflorescence and the weight of individual fruits. The increase in flower number, as well as the increase in inflorescence order, was similar in the three greenhouses except in the greenhouse with the gas oil air furnace. The corresponding number of fruits and the fruit set were similarly affected by the three heating systems. The 2nd inflorescence had the highest fruit set, followed by the 1st, the 3rd and the 4th. The 5th inflorescence had the highest failure of the fruit set. The weight of individual fruits was higher in the 2nd and 3rd inflorescence. The 1st inflorescence produced the smallest fruits. The course of the fruit number and the weight of individual fruits in the inflorescences suffered due to competition.
