Abstract:
The first Balkan Symposium Vegetables and Potatoes in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, June, 4–7 June 1996, was organized by five Agricultural Research Institute SRBIJA; Belgrade, Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops; Novi Sad; Faculties of Agriculture Belgrade and Novi Sad, under the auspices of the International Society for horticultural Science; ISHS. Most of the participants were from Yugoslavia; all Balkan's countries were presented: Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Albania and Turkey and the participants from Hungary and Russia took part as well.
Oral and poster presentations were given by 150 researchers.
The invited lectures, including the address of Dr.
C.A.M. Portas, Chairman of the ISHS Section Vegetables, have highlighted the actual scientific and professional topics on vegetable growing in this part of Europe, confirmed some development trends, but also brought up some differences among the countries of Balkan Peninsula.
In these proceedings all papers were systematized to main vegetables species : Apiceae, Allium, Brassiceae, Asteraceae, Solanaceae, Curcubitaceae, Leguminoseae, Sweet Corn and Pleratus osteratus. Papers and posters in the Section Vegetables and Potatoes have demonstrated the results of general researches, biological and chemical characteristics of varieties, and all important components for growing good quality vegetables and potatoes.
This symposium is important in many ways, not only because it is the first of its kind, but also because it provided an impetus to effort toward joint developmental programs in the production of vegetables and potatoes in the Balkans, trough the results of science.
