Abstract:
Molecular marker techniques continue to be improved in their simplicity of application and cost.
This makes them increasingly practical for routine applications to tropical or subtropical species for which very limited research resources are available.
The earlier hybridisation based techniques have been largely replaced by methods based upon PCR (eg RAPD, AFLP and SSR). Recent developments suggest that alternatives to electrophoresis for the analysis of PCR products will provide a further major advantage in practical applications of this technology.
Important applications include, commercial variety protection, assessment of seed purity, marker assisted plant breeding and the verification of labelling and identity of plants in production and marketing.
Recent examples of applications to tropical and subtropical species include studies of mangoes, bananas, papaya, rice and ornamental and forest species.
