IN VITRO FLOWERING OF ALBINO BAMBOO (BAMBUSA OLDHAMNII MUNRO) REGENERANTS DERIVED FROM AN ELEVEN-YEAR OLD EMBRYOGENIC CELL LINE

Authors:   C. Ho, W. Chang
Keywords:   Bambusa oldhamnii, embryogenic cell lines, albinism, in vitro flowering
Abstract:
An embryogenic callus line derived from floret tissue of Bambusa oldhamnii Munro, and maintained in a Gelrite-solidified MS basal medium plus MS vitamins, 3 mg/l 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2 mg/l kinetin, 6% sucrose for eleven years retained totipotency for embryo production. However, only albino plantlets regenerated from seventy percent of these viable embryos. Five percent of the albino plantlets flowered spontaneously and produced viable pollen. Seventy five percent of this pollen was fertile.
