INSIGHTS ON BRASSICA VEGETABLE MARKET

Author:   H. Ossard
Keywords:   Cauliflower, Imperfect competition, Risk, Information, Public market regulation, Auction, Contract
Abstract:
This paper presents some main characteristics of Brassica vegetable market to non economists. It provides some descriptive statistics on consumer and production trends. Consumption is decreasing. From an analytic point of view, it is important to focus on consequences of uncertainty and of asymmetric information. So the basic simple model of pure competition, usually used by regulators, has to be modified to provide some help to decision makers (farmers, firms and public regulator). The weakness of public regulation is underlined. Then private regulation is presented, specially private decisions to regulate vertical relations from agricultural suppliers to final consumers. For example auctions and contracts can play an important role. In the future, Brassica consumption will be determined by the efficiency of public and private regulation.
