Abstract:
Glucosinolates are sulphur compounds which upon hydrolisis by the enzyme myrosinase give rise to isothiocyanates apart from other substances.
The activity of isothiocyanates against microorganisms, insects, mites and nematodes has been reported in many reviews.
Potatoes are major horticultural crops which are very susceptible to the nematodes Globodera rostochiensis a causative agent of bigeconomical losses.
Thus, in this work we studied the effect of 2-propenyl glucosinolate and their hydrolysis derivative after the addition of myrosinase at pH 7.0, on the activity of juveniles of these nematodes.
There was no effect of the glucosinolate tested alone at concentrations of 0.05, 0.5 and 1.0 mg/ml of water.
In contrast myosinase (25%) combined with 2-propenyl glucosinolate at 1.0 mg/ml of water elicited 100 percent of mortality within 24h.
Accordingly, Brassicaceous plants with high levels of 2-propenyl glucosinolate might be beneficial for inter-cropping systems.
