STUDIES ON POPULATION-ENVIRONMENT RELATIONS IN BRASSICA SPP. WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO PHOTOPERIODIC CONDITIONS

Author:   I.G. Tarakanov
Keywords:   photoperiodic response, adaptation, population, screening, breeding techniques
Abstract:
The analysis of growing form and some quantitative characters within varietal populations of various Brassica crops under marginal photoperiodic conditions (analyzing environments) shows significant variation in biotype developmental rhythms. Some of the genotype by environment interactions within various biotypes can be ascribed to the differences in the length of juvenile phase, critical daylength and civil twilight sensitivity. These important determinants of photoperiodic response must be taken into consideration for crop timing, breeding program design and population screening. Selection pressure erodes population diversity; choosing appropriate sites (stabilizing environment) is important for germ plasm conservation.
