Abstract:
The effects of short-term enrichment with CO2 concentration in the range 350–1500 μmol mol-1 on net photosynthesis (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration rate (E) under different levels of VPD (0.39–0.40 kPa, 1.30–1.40 kPa and 1.80–1.90 kPa) were studied.
Low VPD plants had consistently greater Pn, Gs and E at all levels of CO2 concentration compared to the other treatments.
Pn, Gs and E of all the treatments increased with increasing CO2 concentration up to 1000μmol mol-1. Further increase in CO2 concentration resulted in a decrease in Pn, Gs and E. Both elevated CO2 treatments had significantly (p < 0.01) reduced Gs and E despite significantly (P < 0.01) increased Pn especially in high VPD + elevated CO2 treatment.
High VPD + elevated CO2 had a significant (P < 0.01) greater WUE than the other treatments.
