COBALT-INDUCED STRESS IN SOILLESS LETTUCE CULTIVATION: II. EFFECT ON NUTRIENT EVOLUTION

Abstract:
The incidence of several levels of Co2+ (0, 5, 10 and 20 mg L-1) on N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and B nutrient content and evolution in lettuce (Lactuca sativa v. Malta) cultivated in soilless-greenhouse system were studied in this experiment. An hydroponic system (Hoaglands solution and silica sand as inert substract) inside a greenhouse with temperature day-night 25–15 °C and relative humidity between 70–80 % was used in this experiment.

A significant decrease of N, P and K in leaves in function of Co treatments were observed. The opposite was true for Ca and Mg. Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn concentration in leaves were negative affected by Co presence specially in higher treatments. B concentration in lettuce seems to be incremented in direct relation to Co treatments. Probably, this effect could be associated to a coupled transport to leaf between these elements (anion-cation) manifesting a synergistic effect Co-B.
