COMPARING CALCULATED AND MEASURED WATER CONSUMPTION IN A STUDY OF THE (MINIMAL) TRANSPIRATION OF CUCUMBERS GROWN ON ROCKWOOL

Abstract:
A water supply calculation model, developed by the Research Station in Naaldwijk for glasshouse grown crops, was applied in 1996 and tested in an investigation of the minimum required transpiration of rockwool grown cucumbers. In addition to regulating the water supply this model can also be used to calculate the daily water consumption.

The differences in transpiration realised by the treatments applied ranged from 5 to 23%. These variations in crop transpiration did not lead to differences in yield or quality. There was, however, a clear energy saving effect of the reduction of crop transpiration.

The water supply calculation model accurately and efficiently controlled the water supply. Variations in water demand as a consequence of the treatments applied, were correctly integrated into the model.
