ISHS Acta Horticulturae 457: Symposium on Plant Biotechnology as a tool for the Exploitation of Mountain Lands

THE USE OF PLANTS FOR BIOMONITORING INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION

Author:   M.H. Martin
Abstract:
The use of biological materials for the indication and monitoring of environmental pollution is well established. Despite a very large and expanding literature on biomonitoring that describes a very wide range of species and plant types as potential monitoring agents, only relatively few species have been used more than occasionally in practical situations. This paper discusses the requirements and potential of some plant types for pollution biomonitoring and highlights recent literature with emphasis on heavy metals.
