Abstract:
Crop modelling was slow to reach the potential some had predicted in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The rapid development and proliferation of the personal computer and its innovative software in the 1980s suddenly broke a barrier that seemed to exist.
Now, although crop models are used by a large number of researchers, we seem to be caught on a plateau of capabilities, irrespective of new tools that are available.
A modular approach is needed for integrating knowledge from different disciplines into models to improve our capabilities for predicting actual instead of potential yields.
In addition, the Internet will dramatically increase the access to and use of crop models in research and practice.
However, the most difficult barrier to overcome is the difficulty of obtaining data needed to operate models for specific applications.
Cooperation between researchers in public institutions and the private sector is necessary to overcome this barrier.
