TRUE-TO-TYPE PROPAGATION AND NURSERY MANAGEMENT OF ‘CARABAO’ MANGO

Author:   F. B. Javier
Keywords:   production/clonal orchard, quality scion collection, minimum effective requirment, organic matter enhanced soil, sustainability
Abstract:
The demand for quality planting materials of ‘Carabao’ mango which is true-to-type and precocious is high in the last five years. Hence, this study focused on refinements to improve the asexual propagation of mango in large scale resulting to true-to-type plants. An effective and efficient method in terms of resources and sustainability will contribute to the technology on mango propagation. It highlighted phases and processes in the management of the nursery for quality planting materials.

True-to-type propagation and nursery practices of ‘Carabao’ mango for large scale production of quality planting materials were conducted. Sourcing for quality seeds during the season, proper handling of seeds and preparation, sowing, transplanting, growing seedlings for rootstocks in organically enhanced soil media for six to eight months, proper selection of scions, grafting (cleft) operation, further seedling growth and hardening were the phases and processes involved. One cycle-large scale production of quality planting materials-is about one year.
